prescribed format as per the provisions under the Puducherry Judicial Service (Cadre
and Recruitment) Rules, 2008, as amended [hereinafter referred to as “the Rules’’].

(i)Candidates hailing from the Union Territory of Puducherry alone are entitled to
claim reservation.
(ii)The number of vacancies are only approximate and is liable for modification
including reduction with reference to vacancy position at any time before admitting
the applicants to oral test.

Note:-
(i) The candidates applying under the category of Practising Advocates/
Pleader / Assistant Public Prosecutors under the categories SC, ST, OBC
must have been born not earlier than 02.07.1983 and not later than
01.07.1998.
(ii) The candidates applying under the category of Practising Advocates/
Pleader / Assistant Public Prosecutors other than the categories SC, ST,
OBC must have been born not earlier than 02.07.1988 and not later than
01.07.1998.
(iii) The candidates applying under the category of Fresh Law Graduates must
have been born not earlier than 02.07.1996 and not later than 01.07.2001.
However, the upper age limit, mentioned above, is further relaxable for the
following category of applicants applying under the category of Practicing Advocates /
Pleader / Assistant Public Prosecutors and Fresh Law Graduates:
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS (as on date of Notification)
For Practising Advocates/ Pleaders / Assistant Public Prosecutors
i. Must be a Citizen of India
ii. (a) Must possess a Degree in Law of a University in
India established or incorporated by or under a Central
Act or a State Act or an Institution recognized by the
University Grants Commission, or any other equivalent
qualification and got enrolled as an Advocate under a
State Bar Council established under the Advocates Act,
1961
And
(b) Must be practising as an Advocate or Pleader in the
High Court or Courts subordinate thereto and must
have so practiced for not less than three years on the
date of the High Court’s Notification for recruitment to
the post.
Or
(c) Must be an Assistant Public Prosecutor having not
less than three years of experience as an Advocate and
/ or Assistant Public Prosecutor on the date of notification
For Fresh Law Graduates
Must be a fresh Law Graduate possessing a degree in
Law from a recognized University as mentioned in
Clause – [(I) (ii). (a).] above, who is eligible to be
enrolled as an Advocate and who has secured overall
percentage of 50% marks in acquiring such a Law
Degree in case of open categories and 45% marks in
respect of other reserved categories. Fresh Law
graduates are those who have obtained the Degree of
Law within a period of three years prior to the date of
notification
Explanation:
Applicants who have enrolled as Advocates, but do not possess three years of
practice at the Bar would be eligible to appear in the recruitment for the post of
Civil Judge, under the category of Fresh Law Graduates, provided they satisfy the
other requisite eligibility criteria.
Note:
(i) The educational qualification prescribed for the post should have been obtained
by acquiring the required and recognised qualification in the order of study, viz.,
10th / SSLC + 12th / HSC or its equivalent + Bachelor’s Degree.
(ii) Applicants applying under the category of “Practicing Advocates”, who have
graduated in Law from the academic year 2009-2010 and thereafter, must have
also passed the All India Bar Examination, conducted by the Bar Council of
India.
(iii) The applicants applying under the category of “Practicing Advocates” must be
practicing as Advocate in Courts of Civil and/ or Criminal Jurisdiction on the
date of notification and continue to be practicing Advocate till the date of
selection and appointment.
ELIGIBILITY
i. THE APPLICANT
a) Must be a citizen of India;
b) Must possess adequate knowledge to read, write and speak in English and
Tamil or Malayalam or Telugu.
Note:
The successful candidates who have not studied Tamil as second language in
S.S.L.C. / Matric, must pass the Tamil Language Proficiency Test within the period of
probation
ii. CHARACTER AND CONDUCT
(a) The character of a candidate must be such as to make him/her suitable in
all respects for appointment to the Service. The applicant must produce a
certificate of character and good conduct given after the date of
notification from three responsible persons not related to him/her, in the
format prescribed in Annexure-A. Out of the three persons certifying,
one must be a Senior Advocate or Counsel or a Advocate who has a
standing of not less than 10 years at the Bar and the other two must be
responsible persons, not being relatives of the applicants but who are well
acquainted with the applicants in their private life.
PRACTICE /EXPERIENCE CERTIFICATE /NO OBJECTION
CERTIFICATE/ SERVICE CERTIFICATE TO BE PRODUCED IN
ORIGINAL WHEN CALLED FOR –
(a) Besides submitting the Degree Certificate, Law Degree certificate issued by
the University concerned, Birth certificate or any other authentic certificate
to show the date of birth and Enrollment Certificate issued by the Bar
Council, shall also submit a certificate from the respective associations to show that he/she is a practising Advocate in the association in which he/she is a member or from a senior under whom he/she is practicing as an
Advocate, in the format prescribed in Annexure-B.
(b) In case of applicant coming under the category of “Assistant Public
Prosecutor or Government Pleader”, besides the appointment order as
Assistant Public Prosecutor or Government Pleader, No Objection / Service
Certificate from the Head of Department specifying the length of qualifying
service of the candidates shall be submitted in the format prescribed in
Annexure – C.
(c) In case of applicants coming under the category of “Fresh Law Graduate”
he/she should submit Law Degree Certificate issued by the University
concerned.
Fresh Law graduates need not submit certificate prescribed in
Annexure – B/C.
FEES
Examination fee is Rs.2,000/-.
Note:
Total Fee exemption for All Women candidates, Persons with Disabilities and
candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST).
SCHEME OF EXAMINATIONS
The selection will be made through three successive stages viz.,
(i) Preliminary Examination [Objective Type Question Paper in Optical Mark
Recognition Paper (OMR Paper)]
(ii) Main Examination; and
(iii) Viva–Voce Test.

The Indian Penal Code, 1860
The Indian Evidence Act, 1872
The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act and
The Criminal Minor Acts (including Information Technology Act, 2000; and the
Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012).
PART – C
General Knowledge (Degree standard),
Test of Reasoning and Mental ability (S.S.L.C. standard).
Note:
Minor Acts mentioned in the syllabus are only illustrative and not exhaustive.
MAIN EXAMINATION (DESCRIPTIVE TYPE)
(a) The Main Written Examination shall be held on two consecutive days in the
Forenoon and Afternoon sessions. There shall be four descriptive type question
papers. Each paper shall be of three hours duration and shall carry 100 Marks
each. On the first day, the examination shall be for Translation Paper & Law
Paper – I and on the 2nd day, the Examination shall be for Law Paper II & Law
Paper III
)Syllabus for Main Written Examination:
(i) Translation Paper: There will be one translation paper and the candidates
will be required to translate passages from (a) English into Tamil or
Malayalam or Telugu and likewise, the passages in (b) Tamil or
Malayalam or Telugu into English at their option. The passages will be
from (i) Depositions, (ii) Judgments, (iii) Documents, (iv) Pleadings,
and/or (v) Orders.
Note:
Candidates should have to specify the second language in their online
application for the translation paper i.e., either Tamil/Telugu/Malayalam
(ii) Law Paper – I:
(a) The Code of Civil Procedure, 1908;
(b)The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973;
(c) The Indian Evidence Act, 1872;
(d)Principles of Pleading and The Constitution of India (as
Amended)
(iii) Law Paper – II:
Framing of Issues and Writing of Judgments in Civil Cases.
(iv) Law Paper – III:
Framing of charges and Writing of Judgments in Criminal Cases.
VIVA-VOCE TEST
Viva-voce test shall be for sixty (60) marks and candidates shall obtain
minimum 18 marks for a pass in the Viva-voce.
PREPARATION OF SELECTION LIST
Selection of candidates shall be made on the basis of Total Marks obtained by the
candidates in the Main Examination & Viva-voce
CENTRE FOR EXAMINATIONS
The Preliminary and Main Examinations will be held at Puducherry and/or such
other place as may be decided by the High Court of Madras depending on the number
of applications. The Viva-Voce will be held at Chennai.
